Grants

$3000.00, Henry Luce III Fund for Distinguished Scholarship – Florianopolis, Brazil
Funded a project to investigate the ways of integrating one-to-one laptop teaching methodologies into the public schools in the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil. This study will particularly note didactic and pedagogical elements that reveal their relationship to possible curricular innovations during the processes of teaching and learning with an underlying purpose to promote and generate changes in curriculum and collaborative learning between schools involved in the study.

$3000.00, Henry Luce III Fund for Distinguished Scholarship – Lisbon, Portugal
The Henry Luce III Fund for Distinguished Scholarship provided me with funding to participate in an international presentation at the 2011 ED-MEDIA World Conference on Educational Multimedia, Hypermedia, and Telecommunications in Lisbon, Portugal.  I was the lead on a paper, “Swapping chisel for stylus: The impact of tablet computing on the evolving roles of teacher and learner”, written with Megan Wereley and Alison Schmidt, on the changing face of tablet computing in teacher education.  This paper explored meaningful strategies for using tablets with pre-service teachers both in the field and within the college classroom while providing ways to model best practices, enhance professional development, and hone a keen awareness of appropriate use of progressive technology as part of an ongoing paradigm shift that enhances the overall development of 21st century skills among college-level teaching candidates and their P-12 student populations.  This paper was originally presented at 2011 Association for Teacher Educators Annual Conference in Orlando, Florida, and we were encouraged to pursue an even broader international audience at the Portugal conference.  It was exciting to see how desirable our work is to these international associations and how far ahead we are in our thinking when looking at the rest of the teacher education field.

$2000.00, NEA Foundation Innovation Grant
Grant used to draw upon the rich resources of the nearby Lake Erie islands for an integrated unit on aquatic geology.

$3000.00, Martha Holden Jennings Foundation
Wayne Elementary implemented a standards-based Outdoor Education program into the 5th and 6th grade curriculum. Fifth grade students took part in a day camp experience for two days, while the sixth grade had a two-day, one night experience at a local retreat center.

$500.00, Ohio Middle School Association, Mini-Grant
Grant written to purchase global positioning system to be used in relation to other grants. This technology provided students with the hands-on experiences and exposure to advanced mapping tools they needed to succeed in many other inquiry-based projects.

$4000.00, Martha Holden Jennings Foundation
Grant written to supplement an integrated unit on biomes. Funds were used to purchase materials for the study of local biomes. Funding also helped to defer the cost for students attending the four-day overnight to the Cuyahoga Valley Environmental Education Center.

$4000.00, Martha Holden Jennings Foundation
Grant written to supplement an integrated aquatics unit.
